about

It’s easy to ignore things when they are in states of emergency, if they are falling apart slowly enough. In my relationships with other people, and our relationship with the earth, it’s easy to not do anything if we feel like the danger is far away enough.
I wrote this song during a wet spring in the town of Sackville, New Brunswick, when there were floods happening all across the province. One of my friends had just posted pictures of her family’s cabin being destroyed by water damage, highways were being closed and I cancelled the road trip to Montreal that I was planning. It seemed like the earth was literally crying and begging people to take action against climate change, warning us with these relatively small, but destructive, floods.
I walked around town for hours as I wrote this song, thinking about how easily all my favourite places could be destroyed by a flood or a hurricane. Thinking about how if we were honest and thinking clearly, taking care of the earth would be a priority.
It also forced me to think about the things in my own life that were slowly getting more and more pressing the longer I did nothing about them. At the forefront of my mind was the extreme feeling of wanting to tell someone I loved them, but not having the courage. And like most things, the longer I left it the more it felt like I was sinking underwater.

lyrics

I’ve got a friend who says telling the truth makes things easier
I’ve got a friend who says telling the truth makes things easier

Have you seen the way I stand beside you
Like the trees by the ocean
All bent by the wind
And it takes a flood for us to know
That we're slowly sinking

And this is an emergency
I think we're maybe drowning
But I'm afraid to tell you
Cause I don't want things changing

I think I'm the most serious woman to call herself a silly girl
I think I'm the most serious woman to call herself a silly girl
I'm waiting for another word

The two brown hens you keep in your yard
make me feel like I’m home again
My neighbors out on his front porch
listening to your kind of music
That woman’s voice is singing of summer
Reminding me that I’m slowly sinking

And this is an emergency
I think we're maybe drowning
But I'm afraid to tell you
Cause I don't want things changing

And this is an emergency
I think we're maybe drowning
But I'm afraid to tell you
Cause I don't want things changing

I wanna leave my lights on
I wanna drive my car home
I wanna buy some more clothes
I wanna take a long trip

I wanna laugh at your jokes
I wanna see where you go
I wanna take things real slow
I wanna take the long road

Don’t say what you think I want to hear
Don’t say what you think I want to hear
Tell me what you want
I'll tell you

I wanna leave my lights on
I wanna drive my car home
I wanna buy some more clothes
I wanna take a long trip

But we’ll all be underwater someday
I’ll be underwater someday
